James was born about 1820 near Hume, Roxburghshire, the only identified son (so far) of John Keddie and Janet Andison.
In 1841 he was a 20 year old agricultural labourer in Stow, Selkirkshire where he was living at Newhall (probably a farm).
On 31 December 1884, at the age of 64, James died at Lowood Lodge of typhoid fever, after being sick for 8 days.
