Helen was the daughter of James Hutson, a labourer in Castleside, Ashkirk, and Margaret Stoddart, both from Yarrow. Helen was the second of nine children and married James in about 1842/43. The rest of her family emigrated to Canada a few years after her marriage, leaving Helen behind in Scotland with her husband and children.
Helen died at the age of 69 on 12th May 1890 in Camiestown, St Boswells, where she was living with her daughter Janet Brunton and her family. Helen was sick for 23 days before dying of paralysis.
