Andrew Keddie and Margaret Cavers

In 1874 Andrew had left home and was living at 8 Green Street, Galashiels, and was working as a railway porter. He was 18 years old. 

Their first son, James, was born in 1874, three years before Andrew and Margaret were married.  Margaret had left home and was living at Magdala Terrace in Galashiels, working in a wool factory. 

Andrew and Margaret were married on 22nd June, 1877 at Dale Street in Galashiels where Margaret lived. Andrew was now employed as a railway signalman. Margaret was still at the wool factory, working as a tweed birler. Their second son, John, was born the same year.

In 1880 the family were living in Weirhill, Melrose, and Andrew was employed as a van driver. Their daughter Helen Hutson was born in 1880 in Weirhill. 

In 1881 the family were living at the Beadles House of the Evangelical Church in Melrose, where Andrew was a Church Warden.

Helen died in 1882 after the family moved to 3 Glebe Place in Galashiels.

Joan Cavers Keddie was born in 1883. She died in 1886 after the family had moved from Glebe Place to 44 Huddersfield Street, still in Galashiels. 

In 1889 they were living at 25 Greenbank Street, Galashiels, when son ANDREW was born.

By 1891 they were back in Huddersfield Street, this time at number 18. Andrew was still employed as a grocer's vanman. Daughter Elizabeth Cavers Keddie was born there in 1892

By 1901 they were living at 67 St Andrews Street in Galashiels.

In 1905 they had moved to 10 Galabank Street in Galashiels, where Margaret died from vascular heart disease. John married Margaret Graham later that year.

Andrew probably moved in with his son John at 15 Croft Street after Margaret died.

Margaret was the daughter of Joan Cavers, her father is unknown. She was born in Kersknowe, Eckford on 04 December 1856.

In April 1861 at the age of 4 she was living in Stitchell, Roxburghshire, with her mother, who was a farm servant.

In 1871 Joan and Margaret were living in Roxborough, where Joan was an agricultural labourer and Margaret was 14 years old and still at school.

By 1874 Margaret was working in a wool factory and living in Magdala Terrace, Ladhope, Galashiels. Her eldest son, James, was born in Magdala Terrace when she was 18 years old.  By 1877 Margaret and James were living in Dale Street, Galashiels.

After their marriage Andrew moved into Dale Street with Margaret and James. Six months later on 16 December 1877 their second son, John was born in Dale Street. Andrew was employed as a railway signalman.

About 1879-1880 Andrew, Margaret and their two sons moved to the Beadles House of the Evangelical Church in Melrose, Roxburghshire, where Andrew was a Church Officer. Margaret’s mother Joan was also living with them.

On 27 June 1880 their first daughter, Helen Hutson, was born. By 1882 they had returned to Galashiels and lived at 3 Glebe Place. Andrew was now employed as a vanman. On 23 January 1882 their daughter Helen died after 3 days of croup, aged 18 months.

By 1886 the family had moved to 44 Huddersfield Street in Galashiels where their second daughter Joan Cavers was born 1882-1883 and died of pneumonia on 10 February 1886.

By 1889 they had moved to 25 Greenbank Street and Andrew was still employed as a vanman, delivering groceries. He was now 34 years old.  On 14 March 1889 their son Andrew was born.

By 1891 Andrew and Margaret had returned to Huddersfield Street, this time to number 18, where Elizabeth Cavers (‘Lizzie’) was born on 04 August 1892.

In March 1901 the family were living at 67 St Andrew’s Street, Galashiels. Andrew was still working as a vanman.

Their eldest son, James, was married in 1903, leaving John, Andrew and Elizabeth still at home with their parents.

Margaret Cavers died 16 June 1905 aged 48. The family was then living at 10 Galabank Street in Galashiels. Margaret died of vascular heart disease in the Cottage Hospital in Galashiels at the age of 48.

On the 29th December 1905 their second son, John, married and moved to 15 Croft Street leaving only Andrew and Elizabeth with their parents. Andrew had started working but Elizabeth was still at school. By 1909 son Andrew had left Galashiels and was married in Edinburgh in 1909.

Elizabeth was married to William Scott on 10th December 1910. On 16th August 1910 Andrew died aged 54 following an accident at work. The horse attached to his lorry ran away, and when the lorry collided with a wall Andrew was thrown from the lorry, sustaining injuries and shock. He later died from pneumonia, partly as a result of the shock and partly due to his already having chronic Bright’s Disease (kidney inflammation). He died at his son John’s house at 15 Croft Road.ied on 16 August 1910.
