Robert Menzies and Janet Bain

 Robert Menzies (1823 - 1912)

Robert Menzies was born about 1823 in Kelton, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire. He was the son of James Menzies and Charlotte Montague.

He married Janet Bain in about 1844 when he  was 21.

In 1851 the family lived at Main Street in Penicuik. Robert worked as a general labourer at a paper mill.

By 1861 Robert was an engine keeper at the paper mill, a job he kept until he retired and became a pensioner after 1891, probably in 1893 when he was 70.

In 1871 the family lived at 4 Meggats Build, Penicuik. In 1881 they had moved to Beechfield.

In 1888 Robert married Margaret Douglas at 20 Canal Street in Glasgow. He was still living at Beech Place. In 1901 he moved from number 19 to number 12.

Robert died at the Midlothian Asylum in Edinburgh.

 

Janet Bain ( 1821 -1888)

Janet was born in West Linton, Peebles on 23 March 1821. She was the daughter of Andrew Bain and Lilias Jack.

She died somewhere between 1881 and 1888.

 

Margaret Douglas (1825 - 1899)

Margaret was born about 1825 in Kilfinnan, Argyleshire. She was the daughter of Neil Douglas and Elizabeth Thomson.

When she married Robert she was 63, and working at the paper mill. She lived at 15 Beech Place, Penicuik, a few doors away from Robert's home.

She died 13 May 1899 in Blackburn, Penicuik with chronic rheumatism.
