The Family
John and Janet lived in Burnbrae, Nenthorn after their marriage. In 1878 their first child, Helen was born there.
By 1881 they had moved to Load Head (or New Smailholm). In 1881 James was born.
In 1891 they moved to Camieston, St Boswell. After the death of Janet's father, James Keddie, Janet's mother, Helen Hutson, came to live with them at Camieston. Helen and James went to school in Camieston.
Since their marriage John had worked on farms. He is described in each census as a farm servant. From 1897 on he is described as a shepherd.
Janet died in 1897 while they were living at Hardies Mill Place, in Hume Parish. John and the family remained at Hardies Mill place, John working as a shepherd, James as a ploughman and Helen as a housekeeper, until after 1909 when John married Margaret Dalgleish.
